Goldeneye 007, one of the most beloved games on the N64, was finally released on modern systems a couple of weeks ago. A game with almost mythical status due to its (almost) complete absence in any form for the past 26 years, gamers young and old have been suiting up to take on the seminal Bond game based on one of the most iconic films in the franchise.
Many wannabe 00 agents are disappointed by the games, shall we say, lack of polish. In an era of countless remakes and remasters, Goldeneye feels like an outlier in the worst way, as all we’re getting are higher resolutions and some tweaked control schemes. That’s it.
There are, of course, many ways to improve on the ancient N64 graphics through the use of emulation and mods. But what about the soundtrack? YouTuber Brandon Wiebe has you covered, as he has completely remade the entire soundtrack with modern synth and instrumentation. Check out the video:
Make Mr. Bond ‘Comfortable’
Goldeneye 007 was due a complete remaster back on the Xbox 360, but constant legal issues involving the game’s various rights holders led to that project being cancelled altogether. So it’s a minor miracle we get to play the game at all in 2023.
The Nintendo Switch version features a moderate 720p resolution bump and online multiplayer, while Xbox Series owners get 4K resolution but no online capability. There are no plans for a PlayStation release. More bizarre compromises befitting the game’s troubled legal history.
Given the effort to get the game re-released in any form, a complete remaster seems as unlikely as ever. But thanks to dedicated music nerds like Brandon, at least we get to hear what a remaster might sound like. I’ll take that, Mr Bond.
